A Field Guide to the Butterflies

by Kaysha Siemens

“A Field Guide to the Butterflies” is a graphite drawing on a vintage library date-due card.

I have a precious small collection of these cards (which are no longer used by libraries, so they’re a very finite resource), and every so often I pull out a few and make art on them. Every single one is hard to let go, but it’s also wonderful to see how every one of them connects with a different person in a special way. There are a couple stamped due dates on the card (1973 and 74 – and maybe a 79, it’s hard to read!), and I love how they add history and character to the piece.

The card is mounted and matted with an acid-free mat, and will be shipped flat and ready to fit into any standard 5 x 7 inch frame.

I was born and raised in Canada, and now make my home near Asheville, NC, USA. My work is primarily figurative and narrative. I work mainly in oil and graphite. My current primary focus is Mnemosyne, an ongoing project inspired by Greek myth.

My goal is the object of beauty, but that goal is achieved through engagement in process, and neither aim is worthwhile without meaning and intention. I seek to talk about the ordinary with the language of story, to arrest with exquisite imagery, and ultimately to leave viewers with a feeling, a lingering sense, that they have had a brush with the sublime.
