Forest Path

by Kaysha Siemens

It happened: I got bit by the plein air painting bug. “Forest Path” is a 4 inch round oil painting on copper, painted on location from life this summer at the UNCA Botanical Gardens in Asheville, NC. Copper is a unique and very special substrate, because you can paint directly on it with oil paint and it is perfectly archival. The copper adds luminosity to the paint, and where tiny bits of it are exposed here and there, it glints and shifts in the light when the painting is viewed. It’s truly a magical effect! The painting is varnished to protect the paint and preserve the shine of the copper.

The painting is signed and dated on the back and archivally mounted and float matted. There is no glass, because oil paintings are known to naturally off-gas and will cloud any glass placed over them over time. The outer frame is 8×8 inches and solid wood, and ready to hang or sit on shelf or table.

I was born and raised in Canada, and now make my home near Asheville, NC, USA. My work is primarily figurative and narrative. I work mainly in oil and graphite. My current primary focus is Mnemosyne, an ongoing project inspired by Greek myth.

My goal is the object of beauty, but that goal is achieved through engagement in process, and neither aim is worthwhile without meaning and intention. I seek to talk about the ordinary with the language of story, to arrest with exquisite imagery, and ultimately to leave viewers with a feeling, a lingering sense, that they have had a brush with the sublime.
