A Study in Simplicity
by Nicole Grosjean
Sometimes simplicity is more beautiful than complexity, which is very much in contrast to most of my work. While making this piece I continually tried to add more to it, to make it something deeply layered and extra intricate. This was one of those rare pieces that just wanted to be something different, that fought my stylistic instincts, and wanted for less rather than more. It reminded me to stay simple, to show the form of the branch and delicate gingko leaves, and let the subject sit alone in the unique frame.
The branch is made from layered cut paper with sculpted, painted leaves, and is set inside a solid wood clock case. The piece is free standing, with a circular framing inside the wooden housing. ‘A Study in Simplicity’ is the perfect reminder to take the time to appreciate both the complexity and simplicity of nature in art and in our own environment.

Her sculptural illustrations are patterned from detailed drawings, hand-cut, and then layered to create various depths depending on the size of the piece. The layers are then painted in watercolor and gouache, and are often back lit with LED lights.
