I’m Late, I’m Late, I’m Painting the White Roses Red

The White Rabbit—always running late. On one terrible day, Alice needs red pigment to paint the white roses, lest she loses her head to the Red Queen. Alice crosses paths with the White Rabbit as he scurries to his next appointment, and it is unfortunate to say that Alice acted with ill intentions. She commits a quiet crime, and the White Rabbit will, forevermore, be late. Poor, poor Alice has lost her innocence for good.

I created this piece in 2019, along with its slightly morbid retelling of Alice (which has been slightly modified recently). I don’t fully recall what inspired this piece, but I do know 2019 was tumultuous year for me personally, filled with worsening mental health struggles (little did I know then that 2020 would turn the world upside down, eh?). I’ve also always had a love for everything Alice-themed, especially the video game, “Alice: Madness Returns.” Although I see things I could improve with my 2026 artist eyes and brain, I do still love this piece and I’d love to create more paintings like it! In the meantime, I hope this piece finds a loving home. Thanks for taking the time to read the little story!

About the Artist

Nadia Rausa

Nadia Rausa (they/them) is a mixed race Korean-American artist and author living on Dena'ina and Ahtna lands of Southcentral Alaska. Their work has been described as haunting and ethereal, something Nadia wholeheartedly embrace during their creative process. From ghostly or apathetic figures to creatures overtaken by nature, Nadia’s work focuses on intertwining the reality and liminality of life and death. Outside of creating, you can find Nadia communing with ravens and dwelling in moss. They enjoy spending their free time sitting in nature, gaming of the board/card and video varieties, reading horror and fantasy stories, and spending time with their partner and sassy tabby cat named Tabby. Nadia is also an officiated Korean shaman-priestx / mudang apprentice (애동제자).
