Self Ward

In Korean culture, there is a rope called geum-jul (금줄). It is a ward or protective taboo. Typically geum-jul would be twine twisted to the left and woven with various objects, such as white paper, gochu (Korean red pepper), charcoal, and pine. You might also see this rope with white paper surrounding sacred trees and cairns, who are known as village protectors.

For this piece, I wanted to incorporate a braid with the white paper seen in geum-jul. I believe hair, or really any parts of ourselves, can act as magical wards! Hence, the drawing being titled, “Self Ward.”

Nadia Rausa

Nadia Rausa is a mixed race Korean-American artist and author living on Dena'ina and Ahtna lands of Southcentral Alaska. Their work has been described as haunting and ethereal, something Nadia wholeheartedly embraces during their creative process. From ghostly or apathetic figures to creatures overtaken by nature, Nadia’s work focuses on intertwining the reality and liminality of life and death.
