Geosternbergia

Original Art by Owen Weber

Geosternbergia, aka Pteranodon sternbergi, lived in the Late Cretaceous period, about 88-80 million years ago.  It was first found in Kansas in the 1950’s.  Males of the Geosternbergia are known to have some of the largest wingspans of all pterosaurs, reaching up to 20 ft. long and its head measured up to 4 ft. long.  There is debate on whether this pterosaur deserves a separate genus classification from Pteranodon, but most researchers believe they were closely related.

I have depicted this Geosternbergia diving for a meal.  There are many theories that some pterosaurs did this when fishing.  Most of them probably grazed the surfaces of the water to catch their fish, but I wanted to show something a bit more dramatic.
