The Commuter (Study)
by Hilary Clarcq
This 5″x7″ painting is a preliminary study for “The Commuter,” an illustration included in The Complete Short Stories by Philip K. Dick, published by The Folio Society. The illustration is based on a line near the middle of the story: “The man rose. He was walking a foot off the ground.” I wanted the figure to feel a bit awkward, as if he’s being carried into a future or a reality that he’s not in full control over. The final published illustration is posted over on Instagram.
