For a brief week or two in September, the monarchs arrive. They’re traveling down to Mexico for the winter. The flowers they seem to like most in my yard are the native Savanna Blazing Star – 5ft massive spikes of bright purple. Only got to see one this year, but she very nicely posed for a while so I could snap a few photos before she went on her way again. I wanted to show how temporary they are, pausing only for a while for a visit.
This is an 8x10in watercolor of that very same butterfly, who’s most likely well on her way south.
The title is based off of the piece by fiddler Mark O’Connor – A Butterfly’s Day Out.
Painting includes frame.
