The Offering

by Laura Siadak

Somewhere upon a swell of loam, Raven let himself come to a rest.

Here was a place he could wait, at least for a little while. There seemed to be roots trying to emerge from the gloom, a feeling of growth far below, stretching high above. All of it, still out of sight. Holding its breath between pulses of the black violet feather stolen by Raven.

A careful look, taking some time away from peering all around, to bend down and study the unnoticed. The earth here seemed to fall away, a hole perhaps? And where Raven perched, the roots seemed to grasp, wishing to take.

Raven’s head tilted a bit to the side to consider between the two. Bury what was stolen, or give it back to what reached for it. Glossy black eyes blinked, a shine to them as if knowing he could very well hold onto the feather that was never his.

Laura Siadak is a traditional painter delving into the realm of fantastical illustration. Her love of stories unfold in brief moments within her work. She encourages others to share a story they see from within a piece of artwork, as if adding on another chapter. Much of her work also relies on what friends and family have said around her, even if not knowing they'd sparked an idea. Laura has a BFA from Alfred, School of Art and Design in Alfred, NY 2002 and moved to the St. Louis area in 2005.
