Like so many others, I’ve been inspired by Met’s armor collection. The horses, the pennants, the helmets — it’s impossible not to fall in love with the pageantry. I was luckily enough to live in walking distance of the Met and that lead to a fascination with helmets of all kinds. They allow me to express the abstractions in reflected light while capturing the minute details of their structure. They fascinate me.

About the Artist

Greg Manchess

Gregory Manchess’ versatile oil paintings have been widely awarded in illustration, showcased for countless books and magazines such as Time, Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, and National Geographic. He has painted numerous USPS stamps including the 2023 Snow Globes Christmas series and the March On Washington Forever Stamps. His illustrations are highlighted in the Coen Brothers movie, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and recently his mission patch designs accompanied the NASA astronauts to the International Space Station. He is the author, artist, and playwright of the novel, Above the Timberline. He lectures at universities across the country and teaches online at SmArter Art School. Gregory will be inducted into the NY Society’s Illustration Hall of Fame in September, 2024.
