Kwo aka, Befriending Fire

Original Art by Odera Igbokwe

Kwo aka (Washing my hands), Befriending Fire

Oils, Acrylic, and ink on canvas, 12” x 16”

A pair of hands emerge carrying a water jug. They wash and cleanse themselves as the elements dance, alchemize, and vibrate amongst each other.

Kwo aka (Igbo for to wash one’s hands) references the proverb “Aka nri kwo aka ekpe, aka ekpe akwoo aka nri” which translates to “Let the right hand wash the left, and the left hand wash the right”.
Together that proverb and this painting centers reciprocity, realignment, and creating mutual ecosystems of care.
