Celestial Guardian is an oil and acrylic painting depicting a female celestial being embracing a young girl within the vastness of the cosmos. Accompanied by two hummingbirds, symbols of hope, resilience, and the presence of spirit, the Celestial Guardian radiates an energy of unconditional love, protection, and guidance. Ancient and timeless, she is both a guardian of the soul’s journey and a keeper of the pathways between worlds, offering comfort through life’s uncertainties while illuminating the unseen threads that connect us to something greater than ourselves.

The traditional version of the Higher Self refers to an expanded, omniscient, most enlightened version of your own consciousness which is believed to be the part of you that is connected to a universal source.

While painting this, I also had memories of being a small girl who attended Catholic School, and found comfort each night before falling asleep in the idea of a “Guardian Angel” watching over and protecting me. This is a different concept than Higher Self, but both narratives are experienced as sources of wisdom, guidance and protection.

I created this painting as the “Higher Self” card for an oracle deck that I’m illustrating. Amongst other purposes, the deck explores archetypal energies and inner mythology.

Celestial Guardian embodies the sacred archetype of the Higher Self: divine protection and compassionate wisdom. She represents the nurturing presence that watches over us through times of growth, transition, and transformation—an energy of trust, healing, intuition, and grace.

About the Artist

Mary Ancilla Martinez

I am a New Mexican born artist who enjoys painting the misty and mystical, wild and free ethereal places where unseen greets seen, where dark weaves light, and land meets sea and sky. I appreciate the exploration of dreams, mythology, archetypes, alchemy and metaphysics. I am deeply inspired by nature….secret whispers from the desert winds, the language of trees, the power and magnificence of animals, the dynamism of the elements, and the infinity of the stars and cosmos. My work is primarily figurative and narrative, created mainly in oils. My current focus examines personal sovereignty inspired by Greek, Celtic, Spanish, French, African and Indigenous mythology. I strive for meaning and intention in each piece, and simultaneously enjoy the engagement found in pure process. I seek a feeling of transcendence in my paintings and desire for my work to touch the viewer with a sense of the divine.
