Greenteeth

Original Art by Rachel Perciphone

Jenny Greenteeth (singular and plural) is a river-hag with green skin, long hair, and sharp teeth who, according to most traditions, is known to drag people into the water. There are many other cautionary folktales around the globe that feature similar stories. I first learned about this creature when I read the book “Greenteeth” by Molly O’Neill. In the book, Jenny is not a villain (although she has eaten a person from time to time), but rather a curious and protective creature who wants her carefully tended pond to exist in peace. There are other Jenny Greenteeth, each living a solitary life in their own watery domains.

I felt inspired to paint one! Perhaps she lurks in a nearby lake or river… If you happen to meet her, let’s hope she is in good spirits and of the curious variety!
