White Tiger (白虎) is one of the Four Auspicious Beasts in Chinese constellation mythology. The Beasts are also referred to by other names such as the Four Cardinal Deities, or Four Celestial Guardians. White Tiger represents the cardinal direction of West and the autumn season, and embodies courage, loyalty, and a patron of soldiers and warriors. It is often seen as a powerful protector and a guardian of the physical and spiritual realms, warding off evil spirits and malevolent forces.
Here, White Tiger is the first art release in my quarterly Spirit Guardians art mail club. In light of the current times we live in, I was compelled to use the act of creation to share more about these Four Auspicious Beasts through affordable snail mail. I wanted to put in as many people’s hands these symbols of strength, perseverance, and protection. With the White Tiger embodying the principles of fairness and justice, dishing out punishment to wrongdoers, reflecting the Confucian value of upholding moral integrity, we can call on White Tiger to help us move forward with bold and courageous action in order for us to realize a truly equitable and peaceful future.
White Tiger is drawn with water-based lightfast pigment ink and gold metallic watercolor on Arches rough watercolor paper measured 7 by 10.25 inches.
