Pheraia
by Daniel Bitton
Pheraia, meaning ‘of the beasts’, is one of the many titles of Artemis each representing a different divine role. As the goddess of the hunt being one of her main attributes, I wanted to portray the deep connection and loyalty she shared with her hunting dog.
Often being depicted with her hounds, this enduring pair symbolizes the timeless relationship between humans and dogs which spans across cultures and generations. Neolithic humans 6,000 years ago were sometimes buried alongside their dogs with the oldest buried dog belonging to a puppy found in a 14,000 year old grave in Germany. After recently adopting a dog with my fiancé, I felt compelled to make at least one painting inspired by them.
Material: Acrylic, ink and colored pencil on cradled panel.

Daniel Bitton
My love for drawing began in early childhood as a way to connect with my favorite stories, worlds, and games. I love to depict fantastic characters and tell stories through my illustrations which are inspired by dreams, myths, and the ancient world.
My overall goal with my work is to try and depict intimate moments in narrative scenes through limited color palette and layers of traditional texture. When not drawing, you can find me running on the trails or thinking about my next project.
