The Migrator

by Danny Schwartz

This is a love letter to the beginning of fall, and also to the Canada Goose. I’ve always been told that they’re kind of mean animals, but a) I don’t mess around with wild animals, so I can’t speak to this, and b) they’re so beautiful. The contrast! The shapes! The pattern! And they endeared themselves to me further in 1996’s classic “Fly Away Home”, where Anna Paquin saved a bunch of geese and taught them to migrate by literally flying with them in a little airplane to North Carolina. I would search everywhere for goose eggs, just in case I could find some and also become a goose parent. Unfortunately I never found any, and Jeff Daniels wasn’t my cool artist/inventor dad. I’m really sorry about that.
