Passing Shadows, Hubbard Brook

by Stephen Sengebush

The river walk

Hubbard brook can be found deep in the Granville state forest by the Connecticut/Massachusetts border.  The river carves wide placid curves through the forest, before tumbling through narrow cuts of bedrock, eventually filling the Barkhamsted Reservoir.  The state forest is beautifully maintained, with gentle hiking trails and a small boat put-in.  On this morning, I was struck again by the contrast of cool shadows surrounding the warm pockets where the sun peeks through.  A warm summer haze was bleeding away as I set up the easel, blurring the far edges of the trees where the river turned again.

Passing Shadows, Hubbard Brook” is an original oil painting, 11″x15,” oil on stretched canvas, and mounted in a handmade black wood frame
