Spring in Alaska is short-lived but spectacular. In the short growing season, plants erupt in leaf and bloom during the long days. At summer’s peak, one of the most beautiful and widespread flowers is the Fireweed. This brilliant pink bloom blankets the ground, adding vibrant color to the lush green landscape.

But Fireweed heralds something else – summer’s wane. Its bloom is bittersweet: a reminder that the light and warmth will soon give way to the dark and snow. But for now, it is time to celebrate the bounties that come with summer and enjoy the bright blooms while they last.

About the Artist

Brenda Lyons

An illustrator who loves birds and the worlds of nature and myth. My medium of choice is watercolor, as well as acrylic, ink, and graphite. I've created coloring books for the Cornell Lab Publishing Group and teach illustration at RMCAD. I spend my summers working on wildlife and glacier boats on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, where I get lots of artistic inspiration.
