KING OPOSSUM

by Carolina Lebar

KING OPOSSUM is the latest addition to my *Animal Kingdom* series! I hold a special place in my heart for this incredible animal, having once rescued a baby opossum. She was utterly adorable, and it was lovely to release her into the wild after she grew.

My inspiration is the Virginia opossum, which is a remarkable North American marsupial, intriguing and full of charm. Its unique ability to “play dead,” a fascinating defensive strategy, sets it apart from other creatures. The name “opossum,” deriving from an Algonquian word meaning “white animal,” adds to its mystery. Early explorers like John Smith captured the essence of this captivating animal, further enriching its legacy. Opossums exemplify adaptability, often scavenging for food near human habitats. Within Indigenous cultures, opossums inspire stories of origin, trickery, and fertility, representing the depth of their significance. Their extraordinary presence is woven into various cultural beliefs and folklore, enhancing their allure. This extraordinary creature inspires us to appreciate the wonders of life and the resilience within us all!

“My work begins with pencil, creating fine, beautiful details, then with delicate layers of graphite and occasionally paint, I finalize the art. Using pencil and paint I explore tying the past and the present with gatherings of feather, fur, fins, symbolism, and feminine beauty.”
