June

by Kaysha Siemens

Another piece in my ongoing series of small paintings exploring the portrait amidst clouds and stars, inspired by the soft and dreamy feeling of vintage photographs of anonymous Victorian and Edwardian ladies and silent film starlets. I really enjoy how they provide me with references of unique and varied faces, while having a distinctly non-modern sensibility that lends them a magical feeling of another time and place.

The only trouble is, I’m running out of ideas for titles! I named this lady ‘June’ because she is the sixth of these cloud-and-stars portraits I have painted. As the sixth month, June is associated with the number six, and with the goddess Juno. It also has a lovely old-fashioned sound as a name in its own right.

Oil on panel, 5×7 inches. The frame is 6 7/8 x 8 7/8 inches in total, and is ready to hang or sit.

I was born and raised in Canada, and now make my home near Asheville, NC, USA. My work is primarily figurative and narrative. I work mainly in oil and graphite. My current primary focus is Mnemosyne, an ongoing project inspired by Greek myth.

My goal is the object of beauty, but that goal is achieved through engagement in process, and neither aim is worthwhile without meaning and intention. I seek to talk about the ordinary with the language of story, to arrest with exquisite imagery, and ultimately to leave viewers with a feeling, a lingering sense, that they have had a brush with the sublime.
