In a Golden Afternoon

by Nicole Bustamante

This is a special one. While I was working on it, I was caring for my 16-year-old cat, who became gravely ill and passed away before I could finish. She was the last of my three cats; the others had passed the previous year, at ages 17 and 20. In their final days, they felt so fragile, like delicate flowers I was trying to keep alive. Caring for them created a kind of quiet isolation, as if we existed in a world suspended from reality. Now that they’re all gone, that time with them feels like a dream or something that happened long ago, in a gentle, faraway Wonderland-like world. I feel privileged for the time I shared with my furry children, and I put those happy thoughts and memories into this piece.
