High Archivist of the Emerald Court
Original Art by Matthew Spencer
Once on track to become a squire, this equine chose the path of a scribe instead. They have earned their position among the realm’s most cherished historical records, poems, spells, and illuminated manuscripts- all of which they handle with great care and make every effort to preserve.
–
Inspired by the smell of old paper, by following one’s niche passions, antique draft harnesses, and by the Medieval collection at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Painted in watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil on 140lb Arches hot press paper. Embellished with gold ink and 23k gold leaf.
The artwork is matted in burgundy and framed.

About the Artist
Matthew Spencer
Matthew Spencer is a queer illustrator from southeast Michigan.
He works primarily in ink, watercolor and gouache (often embellished with metal leaf), creating pieces inspired by folklore, history, and nature.
Outside of his freelance work, he has been slowly but surely been illustrating his own tarot deck. The Courtly Beasts Tarot- along with a good deal of Matthew’s other personal work- depicts a fantastical world populated by anthropomorphic animals in elaborate costume, set within lush environments both botanical and architectural.
