Florentine
by Heather Hudson
Florentine is a small portrait of a dubious but distinguished fellow. I painted him in acrylic gouache on paper, inspired by both the Medici family of 15th century Florence, and also an ornate little gold frame that’s been sitting in my studio for a while. Not including the frame, Florentine’s painted portrait measures 5”x 5”.
There is an old Latin saying, Homo homini lupus, literally ‘man is a wolf to man’, meaning that humans are naturally cruel as wolves to each other. All things considered, this is a bit insulting to wolves.
