Eden’s Serpent

by Tia Kinsman

May I present my debut stained glass piece in a gallery setting, Eden’s Serpent!

I have been working on stained glass for almost four years, though my fascination with the medium started when I was much younger. From pre-k to second grade I was in a private Catholic school, which involved church every Friday morning. Instead of listening to the sermons, most of them time I was lost in the absolutely wild and grotesque stained glass the lined the church.

I thought it would thus be fitting to have the serpent be my first gallery stained glass piece. My thirst for knowledge on techniques and processes has been endless since I first tried the medium, so much so that I am changing my career path to include working with it more, and acquired a kiln for glass fusing and traditional stained glass painting techniques that have been used since medieval times, and is where stained glass got it’s name!

This piece uses traditional Tiffany style methods (copper foil), as well as fused glass scales on the serpent, and traditional reusche paint details, but with a modern twist!

The small panel measures 9.5″H by 5″W and has a heavy duty chain that brings the height to 12″. It is best hung on a permanent fixture, and not a suction cup hook, as it is a decent weight.

*Please note that traditional stained glass is leaded, but as long as you’re not actively trying to lick it and wash your hands after handling there is little to no risk in displaying it.
