Antique Elegance

by Nicole Grosjean

Antique, handmade carousel horses have their own unique beauty somehow enhanced by peeling paint and exposed wood. These vintage treasures are marked by time and countless riders, creating a patina of well-loved wear and air of unbridled imagination. This artwork is a tribute to antique carved carousel horses, their craftsmen, and all those who lovingly rode them over the decades. The horse is cut from cherry wood veneer, painted with watercolor, gouache, and acrylic. 24K gold gilding and vintage glass rhinestones bring sparkle to the piece, though a few decorations have been lost and the mirror broken over the years. The piece is framed with museum glass in an ornate gold and black frame that measures 15.5″ from the corners. This unique work of art is certain to attract attention and add antique elegance to any space!

Nicole Grosjean graduated with a BFA in illustration from the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design in Denver, Colorado in 2008. She combines her passions for fantasy and craftsmanship into unique, multi-layered works of art. To her, there is nothing more valuable than an object an artist has created with their own hands. She endeavors to build pieces that are not only illustrations, but wonderfully complex environments in their own right. Nicole is constantly trying new techniques and pushing the boundaries of materials and mediums to bring her visions to life.

Her sculptural illustrations are patterned from detailed drawings, hand-cut, and then layered to create various depths depending on the size of the piece. The layers are then painted in watercolor and gouache, and are often back lit with LED lights.
