And In Depth

by Olivia Di Gregorio

Kept in the artist’s private collection for years, this original oil painting marks a period of transition into following the influence of the Pre-Raphealites. ‘And In Depth’ was painted to reflect a moment of languishing within a hybrid state of melancholy, and hopefulness.

Bathed in dammar, a traditional tree sap, the varnish acts like a reflecting pool of thick resin glass, enhancing the depths in which the figure is contained.

Olivia Di Gregorio is a painter based in Toronto, featuring mythical figures in dream-like landscapes throughout her work. Her images look to mythology for inspiration, with fairies and elements of magic to explain a healing shift from one state into another as a form of visual escapism. She has recently been selected as a finalist in the Beautiful Bizarre Magazine Art Prize in the traditional art category, exhibited at Modern Eden in San Francisco using a grant awarded from the Ontario Arts Council, and published in Booooooom’s ‘Tomorrow’s Talent Vol. II’ curated art book.
