Health and Care

by Kaysha Siemens

“Health and Care” is a graphite drawing on a vintage library date-due card.

I have a precious small collection of these cards (which have not been used by libraries for a couple decades now, so they’re a very finite resource), and every so often I pull out a few and make art on a small batch of them. Every single one is hard to let go, but it’s also wonderful to see how every one of them connects with a different person in a special way. I love how the title of the book adds intriguing context to the drawing, while the art elevates the card from ephemera to artifact.

The card is 3×5 inches, and is mounted and matted with an acid-free mat. It is framed under glass in a 5×7 inch solid wood frame. The outer dimensions of the frame are approximately 6.5 x 8.5 inches.

I was born and raised in Canada, and now make my home near Asheville, NC, USA. My work is primarily figurative and narrative. I work mainly in oil and graphite. My current primary focus is Mnemosyne, an ongoing project inspired by Greek myth.

My goal is the object of beauty, but that goal is achieved through engagement in process, and neither aim is worthwhile without meaning and intention. I seek to talk about the ordinary with the language of story, to arrest with exquisite imagery, and ultimately to leave viewers with a feeling, a lingering sense, that they have had a brush with the sublime.
