I’ve always marveled at the resemblance between the circular halos of renaissance icons and the red
roundness of the southwestern Sun. I find myself marrying their meanings in my pieces. The life-giving Sun
behind the head of a beautiful creature is my version of a catholic saint. I view all non-human life on earth
especially animals as pure from the hubris and greed of war-mongering humans. The purity I see in
animals almost demands I give them a halo in my work.

About the Artist

Sarah Van Rose

Sarah is an illustrator from Colorado living in Brooklyn. She obtained a BFA in Sequential Art from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Her illustration encompasses a variety of subjects and she has completed work for Magic the Gathering, book publishers, beer packaging, and editorial clients. Her concept art and painted backgrounds have been featured in several short films and have been shown at SXSW, featured on PBS, and Huffington Post. Sarah has won awards from Smarter Art School, Writers and Illustrators of the Future, and been featured on Beautiful Bizarre.
