Fires that Cleanse

A 6.25” x 4.75″ acrylic painting on illustration board of a figure in historic Japanese military costume being struck by a roiling blast of flame. The back of the board is slightly abraded in spots, stamped with the artist’s contact info, and in pencil is written “Fire Strike.” “Fire Strike” was the working title of the card that went to press as “Fires that Cleanse.”

This is a vintage piece of trading card game illustration painted for the Legend of Five Rings expansion “Forbidden Knowledge” in 1996. It was one of my first works for L5R and I brought to it my enthusiasm for the work of late Ukiyo-e master artists who depicted military heroes and their often horrific deaths. I really put my heart into that blast of flame.
This particular piece was approved by the art director without incident.
