The Two Tongued Tiger

Original Art by Mark Sarmel

The Two Tongued Tiger is an imaginary beast inspired by many tigers throughout the arts and culture. Firstly, this magical beast is a riff on the tiger from Tiger Tateishi’s “A Tiger in the Land of Dreams” a rather dreamy tale of a tiger wandering through a surreal landscape. The colors have dual inspirations, firstly the bold colors of Mexican tapestries and secondly the works of the artist Lauren YS.

Always in my work I’m trying to play with images that are singular and iconic, that have roots and inspiration from something familiar, but have a twist that comes from my own life and experience. I want to build a world that is full of memorable characters that are rooted in something familiar, but are of my own creation.

This original painting is made with acrylic paint, india ink and gold leaf on Strathmore Cold Press Watercolor paper. It measures 16″x20″

Finally, I made a short poem for this strange and magical beast.

The Two Tongued Tiger awakens to a new day.
It yawns and stretches and admires its claws
and it takes two licks, one for each of its paws.

Time to go to town, time to eat!
But first,
time to take a drink.

The Two Tongued Tiger
walks with four feet on the ground
As it travels along a trail into town.

Along the way,
the trail split into two
and the Two Tongued Tiger did too.

One continued on to town
The other yawned
and simply laid down.

The trail twisted and turned
and soon that trail split into two too
and the Two Tongued Tiger split into two too.

One continued to town,
the other yawned
and simply laid down.

When the Two Tongued Tiger entered the town
All the people screamed
and ran ’round.

For they were scared they might be
who the Two Tongued Tiger
came to see.
