Grace O’Malley, Pirate Queen

by Greg Manchess

Grace O’Malley was a real Irish ruler and pirate whose life went on to inspire lots of folklore.

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m no stranger to pirate drawings and paintings. I was honored to create ten paintings for National Geographic’s Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship, a traveling exhibition, now on permanent display in Salem, MA. I also had a five year stint as the Captain Morgan Spiced Rum artist. (A fun bar conversation starter while it lasted!) When Tor gave me the chance to explore Grace/Gráinne O’Malley, I was very excited to spend some time with this fierce ruler in the late 1500s.
