The Tin Man

by Greg Manchess

I’ve been a fan of the Wizard of Oz since my whole family sat around a black and white TV set watching the 1939 movie every spring. I’ve had the pleasure of painting images from Baum’s world throughout my career. This drawing was done as preparation for a personal piece that I painted at the Illustration Master Class, and later had the honor of being chosen as the cover for Spectrum Fantastic Arts. Growing up with the images from the movie first, it’s difficult re-visualizing the scenes while keeping away from the ground that many, many artists have already trod, and still keep the magic alive for the reading experience. With this painting, I had the freedom to go as far afield as I wanted, so I took the opportunity to stretch all the characters, and designed the Tin Man further into a robot.
