In the 1840s, when the orbits of he known planets were calculated to test Newtons laws of gravity it was found that observations of Uranus weren’t quite lining up with expectation. Mathematicians realized that the movements could be explained by the presence of another, as yet unknown planet. They predicted where this planet would have to be to have the observed effect on Uranus’s orbit and as soon as an observatory checked their prediction, that is where Neptune was found.
