Capture the Moon

In Korean folklore, an Imugi is a type of proto-dragon often depicted as a large serpent. To become a true dragon, an Imugi must catch a yeouiju from the heavens. Yeouiju are the orbs you often see Eastern Dragons holding in their claws.

And with my piece, I wanted to depict such a moment while also having the yeouiju in this painting double as the moon to reflect my current fascination with astrology and the celestial giants in our night sky.

Shirley Jackson

Shirley Jackson aka LIONINTHETREES is a Black and Korean artist residing in Central California with her German Shepherd Dog, Eden and the spirit of her iguana, Ness (RIP).

Shirley holds a BFA in Visual Communications from Weber State University. Her body of work heavily features animals and the natural world infused with magic, folklore, and her roots as a printmaker. She works in both traditional and digital mediums; and has now danced her way into product design.
