The Poppy Witch

by Paige Carpenter

In the shadows, under the starlight, the Witch walks through the ruins of an abbey.  The poppies here grow on hallowed ground.  They bring sweet dreams and soothe the pain of the sick and dying.  Under her feet, the earth is rough and cool.  Autumn is coming, nights are lengthening, and the wind blows cold.

In the Victorian language of flowers, poppies represent sleep– or death.

“…Yea, she hath passed with poppies in her arms,
Under the star of dusk, through stealing mist,
And blessed the earth, and gone, while no man wist.”
