“Flaco, the New York City Eagle Owl”
by Julia Lundman
This painting is my tribute to the beautiful Eagle-Owl, Flaco, who lived in New York City’s Central Park. He famously escaped his enclosure at the Lincoln Park zoo and found his way, even with weakened wings, to Central Park. Over the course of a year, he became stronger, learned to hunt, and to do other owl things, flying all over the city to the delight of animal enthusiasts everywhere. About a year after his escape, he tragically died due to eating rats that were poisoned with rodenticide and pigeons that had a virus. For me, it was the first time I became aware of the hazards raptors face in our cities and the many questions about raising healthy birds in zoos.
The painting is 13″ x 13″. Watercolor and colored pencil on Stonehenge Legion paper.

Her process starts with sketchbook practice in the early morning hours. If a sketch feels interesting, she develops it into a series of more finished drawings. If the subject still resonates, she paints the image either in oil, acrylic or watercolor.
