King Owl

by Carolina Lebar

“King Owl” is an artwork from my latest series, Animal Kingdom. The painting was chosen to symbolize the owl’s wisdom and regal presence, depicted by the crown it wears. The painting itself is a visual representation of this concept, with the owl’s gaze, the glow, and the intricate details of its feathers.

For this painting, I start by creating an intricate pencil drawing on a wooden panel. After the drawing is complete, I add a texturized background to the piece with acrylics. The deliberate contrast between the controlled detail and the added chaos creates a fascinating visual interest that expresses nature’s majestic beauty and complexity.

In this piece, I introduce a new element to my Animal Kingdom series-white animals on black backgrounds. This is the first of its kind. The inspiration for this unique addition comes my childhood love for the movie Labyrinth, where the Goblin King, Jareth (played by David Bowie), can shapeshift into a white barn owl. I was also influenced by the lesser-known film The Fourth Kind, both films left a lasting impression on me with its portrayal of barn owls as both sinister and beautiful.

Originally from Colombia, Carolina resides in the United States. The pieces she creates explore humanities connections to nature that are echoed throughout history within beliefs and lore.

“My work begins with pencil, creating fine, beautiful details, then with delicate layers of graphite and occasionally paint, I finalize the art. Using pencil and paint I explore tying the past and the present with gatherings of feather, fur, fins, symbolism, and feminine beauty.”
