Autumn’s Window, Bash Bish Falls

by Stephen Sengebush

Autumn’s Window, Bash Bish Falls

In the far corner of western Massachusetts, just across the New York Border, Bash Bish Falls cascade down a series of narrow notches, finally split by a giant monolith of schist – the remnants of a glacial spillway.  The parking lot is broad and dusty, filled with tourists and dogs.  I join them for the short walk upstream to the base of the falls.

All around, once-green leaves have slowly bled out their chlorophyll, leaving the carotenoids and anthocyanin revealed in ruddy yellows and reds.  The day darkens, and the falls themselves are cast in shadow.  The setting sun glows through the leaves on the far side of the valley, painting us in bright neon.

Despite the crowd, all is quiet on a late October evening.

Autumn’s Window, Bash Bish Falls” is an original oil painting, 12″x9,” oil on linen panel, and mounted in a black and gold floater frame.
