by Bud Cook

This is a finished study for a new portrait of my friend Zelda Devon. I have never met Zelda in person but I have been a fan of her work for many years. I have a continuing portrait collection which I call “The Tribe” – made up of artist friends, peers, mentors, former teachers, and artists who inspire me. I began working on a portrait of Zelda back in 2015 but it never came to fruition. With this completed study I am one small step closer to the actual finished fully painted portrait! Many thanks to Zelda for playing along.

Bud Cook is a painter whose strong command of the human figure is at the root of his illustrative and fine art work. His keen study of life yields a cleverly abstracted and stylized realism. This has led him to work for companies such as Wizards of the Coast, Dark Horse Comics, Scientific American and Johns Hopkins Health Review. Bud shows his personal work in galleries across the country and is an adjunct instructor at Quinebaug Valley Community College where he has been teaching in the Art Department since 2014.
