Winding Down, Carpenter’s Falls
by Stephen Sengebush
The last days of summer
Nestled in between farmland and pasture in the middle of western Massachusetts is a small conservation area home to Carpenter’s Falls. Towards the end of summer, the rains are few and far between, and what was once a sprightly creek is now only pools of slow-moving water, home to tadpoles and mosquitos. The moss is a deep, almost burnt green, and the footing is treacherous. The water winds its way down past old hand-stacked rock walls, and drops of a series of ledges into a wide shallow pool. Here the sun is able to penetrate the dense canopy and illuminate the rocks and fallen trees that invite rest and contemplation, as long as there’s enough bug spray. I’m ready for fall colors and temperatures, but the heat isn’t quite ready to let go.
“Winding Down, Carpenter’s Falls” is an original oil painting, 12″x9,” oil on oil-primed linen, and mounted in a 3/4″ antique gold and black floater frame.
