Useless But Unstoppable

by Breeyn

Sunfish, also known as Mola Mola, are large ocean dwelling fish that have been described as having the nutritional merit of a rice cracker. They are far more work to eat than they are worth, and thus have no natural predators. They just drift about getting bigger and bigger – up to ten feet long. One marine biologist noting this described them as useless but unstoppable. An inspiration.

Ready to hang. Frame measures 14 inches wide by 11 inches tall. Created with hand-shaped teal sequin film, thread, htv, acrylic paint, illusion fabric.

Breeyn is an artist and designer based in Canada. After a decade designing custom couture fashion specializing in traditional hand-embellishment including embroidery and beading, she now creates 3D light-reflective pieces using those same techniques blended with hand-cutting, painting and shaping sequins. She twists natural and supernatural themes, merging science and fairytales to lure the viewer into believing in everyday magic. Flowers, insects, anatomy and mythical creatures are her favourite themes. Bones and bugs.
