A Union of Houses (Two of Cups)
by Matthew Spencer
The Court of the Emerald King bears witness to the union of two of His subjects: a greying knight whose loyalty has been proven time and again, and a devoted farrier without whom the King’s Knights would be hobbled.
–
Inspired by Leyendecker’s knights, illuminated manuscripts, this season of Pride- and all the different forms love can take.
Painted in watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil on 140lb Arches hot press paper. Embellished with gold ink.
The artwork is matted in a handpainted mat and framed in a hammered wood frame, which has been embellished with gold ink, and the inner edge gilded to bring additional glow to the piece.

Matthew Spencer
Matthew Spencer is a queer illustrator from southeast Michigan.
He works primarily in ink, watercolor and gouache (often embellished with metal leaf), creating pieces inspired by folklore, history, and nature.
Outside of his freelance work, he has been slowly but surely been illustrating his own tarot deck. The Courtly Beasts Tarot- along with a good deal of Matthew’s other personal work- depicts a fantastical world populated by anthropomorphic animals in elaborate costume, set within lush environments both botanical and architectural.
