The Bridge

Those of you who have followed my work know that I have been traveling to civil war battlefields to paint on site. Antietam was the first field I visited, and holds a special place in my heart. There’s something about making art that helps me slow down, really be in that hallowed place, feel deeply. I’ve painted this bridge many times now. I’ve painted it in different seasons, and in different places in my life. I will keep coming back as long as I’m able.

For twenty-six years I used my art to build imaginary worlds, populated by fantastic creatures. More recently, my desire for invented worlds has given way, unexpectedly, to a love affair with this world. I am experimenting with new approaches, both in terms of subject matter and craft. I am developing my instinct for authenticity... for things with real power. I find myself drawn to landscapes, both outward and internal, that feel real.
