Samurai Helmet

A few years ago I went into a deep dive, painting every type of helmet I could think of. I loved pushing the paint to be as abstract as possible, while maintaining the concrete image. It was a rewarding exercise that produced this Samurai helmet, among others. My years studying Ninjutsu, and a memorable trip to Japan, makes this painting a little closer to my heart than usual.

Gregory Manchess’ versatile oil paintings have been widely awarded in illustration, showcased for countless books and magazines such as Time, Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, and National Geographic. He has painted numerous USPS stamps including the 2023 Snow Globes Christmas series and the March On Washington Forever Stamps. His illustrations are highlighted in the Coen Brothers movie, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and recently his mission patch designs accompanied the NASA astronauts to the International Space Station. He is the author, artist, and playwright of the novel, Above the Timberline. He lectures at universities across the country and teaches online at SmArter Art School. Gregory will be inducted into the NY Society’s Illustration Hall of Fame in September, 2024.
