Ichthyosaurus
by Owen Weber
Ichthyosaur, meaning “Fish Lizard”, was one of the earliest paleontological discoveries, with the first fossils being found back in 1699! The first Female Paleontologist, Mary Anning, and her brother Joseph Anning, found some of the first full skeleton of an Ichthyosaur in Lyme Regis, on the Dorset coast. Mary Anning went on to become instrumental in the discovery of many species. Ichthyosaur populated the seas for a very long time, about 160 million years. The earliest fossils being in the Triassic era and the latest dating all the way to the Late Cretaceous era. Their skeletons range from being about 3 ft. long to about 66 ft. long, and they weighed up to 2000 lbs. Fossils of various Ichthyosaurs have been found all over the world, where there was water, there were Ichthyosaurs.
