Hades and Persephone

by Paige Carpenter

This listing includes two original oil paintings on cradled birch panels.  Each panel measures 6 inches x 6 inches x 1 inch deep.  The sides are gilded.
Hades, the god of the dead, fell in love with Persephone, the goddess of Spring.  Her mother, Demeter, goddess of the harvest, searched for her daughter until she discovered that Persephone had been taken to the underworld.  Demeter begged Hades to return her daughter to the upper world.  However, because Persephone had eaten six pomegranate seeds, the fruit of the underworld, she was forever tied to that place.  So for six months, Persephone returns to the upper world, and Demeter’s joy fills the world with green plants and warmth.  When Persephone returns to the underworld for the other half of the year, Demeter’s sorrow gives us cold and barren fields.
