Eowyn, Lady of Rohan
by Kim Kincaid
Eowyn is one of the few female characters in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. She is often compared to a white lily or flower, with a grave and thoughtful countenance. Very fair was her face, and her long hair was like a river of gold. When we first meet Eowyn, she is virtually friendless and alone, doomed to wait upon her uncle, whom she loves as a father, watching him fall deeper and deeper into Wormtongue’s spell.
“But who knows what she spoke to the darkness, alone, in the bitter watches of the night, when all her life seemed shrinking, and the walls of her bower closing in about her, a hutch to trammel some wild thing in?”
No wonder Eowyn, who had courage to match any man, feared a cage.
