Borealopelta
by Owen Weber
Borealopelta, meaning “Northern Shield”, was an nodosauridae found in Alberta, Canada in the Cretaceous Era. Recently, a Borealopelta fossil was found in an oil sands mine and was in impeccable shape. It has become one of the most famous fossil finds in recent history. Much of the exterior of the dinosaur was found quite intact with many of the scales and spikes laid out exactly as it would have been when it was alive. Very Exciting stuff! It apparently washed out to sea after dying and the loose sand kept the fossil in such good condition. Paleontologists have also found evidence of coloration; it had a reddish tone to it when it was alive. Since there is such great reference of this fossil, I thought this would be a perfect dinosaur to depict as accurately as possible.
