Bonsai at the Edge

by Lisa Cyr

Bonsai at the Edge   9.25 inches by 7.5 inches

Bonsai at the Edge is a multi-paneled mixed-media painting about self-reflection and contemplation. In many cultures, the bonsai tree is known to evoke harmony and balance. It is often used as an object for meditation practice. In the utterly magical dreamscape painting, the spiritual bonsai tree sits at the edge of a cliff: a crossroads of sorts. One can choose to be in the moment with a keen focus on the sun of infinite hope just over the horizon or one can be consumed with the past, spiraling into the chaos that lurks below.  The two side panels that flank the triptych painting symbolize the doors we choose to enter and exit through in life.  Throughout the mixed-media embossed painting, leaves are used as symbols of change. In the cliff, the embossed leaves blow across the surface to convey the uncertainty that life brings. The leaves that are on the side panels are layered in a pattern throughout, symbolizing the many changes that life has presented to us over the years. The raised leaves on either side of the doors are more stable, serving as the handles we grab onto in life.

The painting is done on paper that was custom embossed by the artist. Acrylic paint is used as the primary medium. Several metallic acrylic paints are used to create the shimmery effect on the raised surface.

The art is  9.25 inches by 7.5 inches and is matted with a 16 x 20-inch, heavy duty 8-ply matt board. It comes with a backing panel and sits inside a clear sleeve for transport.

The visually-compelling, imaginative works of artist and author Lisa L. Cyr use symbolism, metaphor and allegory to stimulate curiosity, provoke thought and encourage further inspection. A poetic, rhythmic synthesis of drawing, painting, collage and assemblage, Cyr's visually tactile, mixed-media works are composed to collectively create a new reality with a more expressive and symbolic arrangement, transforming the ordinary to the extraordinary.

In Cyr’s world of the fantastic, the viewer is shown a portal into a highly imaginative, mystical realm where supernatural beings, winged guardians and underworld deities coalesce in magical, multilayered environments and dreamscapes. Within the artist’s personal narration, visual tales of quests to worlds unknown evoke transcendental experiences for those who are willing to enter into the pictorial drama. Through the multilayered narrative, we journey to a world beyond, where the awakened subconscious leaves the viewer spellbound and wanting more.
