Roaring Black Dragon

This small Roaring Black Dragon painting was an experiment in pushing intense color relationships, value, and textures. Using intense pinks, blues, oranges and greens to create an aggressive harmony to create and energy that jumps off the board. I’ve been looking to develop a different color sense and I think I’m just cracking open these colors with this piece. I’ve also been testing out using wood as a material rather than paper to see what kind of interesting result I might get by including a bit of the wood grain into the painting. Overall I’ve been really excited to bring more intensity and color into my work and this experiment will no doubt lead to more larger pieces using intense color. Acrylic on Wood

Steve Ellis

Steve Ellis is an artist, comics storyteller, writer and illustration instructor. He has won awards for his work including High Moon and The Only Living Boy with co-creator David Gallaher as well as his work on AMC’s Breaking Bad: The high Cost of Living game. Steve has also created various and sundry illustrations and comics for Marvel, DC, Blizzard Entertainment, Wizards of the Coast and many more. He has taught drawing, illustration and comics at Syracuse University since 2004. Steve is currently at work on the world of Thronclaw Manor. The story of Melody Hawthorne, a girl who in searching for her long lost family finds herself in a world of monsters out of myths and legend. Steve currently lives in the wilds of Ithaca, NY with his wife Yamila, daughter Luna and their lovely greyhound Blossom.
